Micropipette Do’s and Don’ts: Prevent Cross-Contamination | Safety Newsletter #01
Do's
- Use filter/barrier tips for all contamination-sensitive work (PCR, qPCR, RNA, cell culture, cloning, etc.)
- Attach tip firmly until it clicks/seals properly
- Hold the pipette lightly with relaxed shoulders and neutral wrist
- Keep pipette vertical (90°) during aspiration
- Aspirate and dispense with smooth, consistent and slow speed
- Touch the tip to the side wall of the receiving tube at a slight angle when dispensing, to minimize the aerosol generation
- Clean the exterior of the pipette regularly with 70% ethanol
Dont's
- Reuse tips or use non-filter tips for contamination-sensitive work
- Force the tip on or use incompatible tips
- Grip tightly, raise elbows/shoulders, or twist your wrist
- Pipette too quickly (creates aerosols or inaccuracy)
- Touch the tip to the bottom of the tube or wipe it
- Withdraw the tip immediately after aspiration
- Lay pipette horizontally with tip on or point it upward
- Leave used tips on the bench or in the pipette
- Hover pipette tip over multiple open tubes
